VSA Florida-Brevard County (VSAF-BC) has been an important thread in the fabric that is the Brevard County arts community since 1987. VSAF-BC also has been an integral program of Rockledge-based Brevard Achievement Center (BAC) as of November 2003. Today, under the leadership of Director, Lee Sorensen, VSAF-BC serves approximately 1,700 youth and adults of differing abilities through three annual events. Thanks to the support of individual donors, corporate and foundation grants, these events have become important opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in the arts.
Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students from middle and high schools within Brevard Public Schools, as well as adults from BAC, come together for a day of show-stopping performances in theatre, dance, singing and songwriting. To prepare, classrooms work with a visiting artist to design routines in their favorite performance art for eight weeks leading up to the Showcase. Then, on the King Center for the Performing Arts’ Studio Theatre stage, these talented individuals perform their routines for parents, family and friends. The Showcase opened to rave reviews in 2013.
Held at the Brevard Zoo since 2003, elementary and middle school ESE students from across Brevard get a chance to participate in art stops, musical and physical activities and watch their favorite animals frolic in the sun during this three-day spring event. Each Festival also brings with it a different theme that visiting artists use to help students create works of art for display at the event. At the conclusion of the Festival, artwork is moved to a public location for the community to enjoy. Approximately 1,200 students and 400 volunteers, on average, participate in the Festival each year.
Holiday Card Contest
In 1997, local attorney Bob Moletteire decided he wanted a unique holiday card to send to his clients and contacted VSAF-BC to discuss his idea; from there the annual Holiday Card Contest was born. Held in elementary and middle school ESE classrooms within Brevard Public Schools, submitted artwork is personally judged by Mr. Moletteire and his firm. From there, three winners are chosen with second and third place winners receiving a gift card to a local department store and certificate while the first place winner not only is awarded a gift card, but the honor of having his or her drawing used as the face of the firm’s holiday card. In addition, Moletteire Injury Law gives a cash donation to VSAF-BC. It’s definitely a most wonderful time of year thanks to the firm’s generosity.
